Zap Comix was among the first of the Underground “Comix.” Created by the infamous and legendary Robert Crumb in 1967, he sold his comics from a baby carriage pushed up and down San Francisco’s Haight Street.

The topics covered in Zap centered primarily around sex, drugs, and almost overwhelming angst. It was a far cry from the standard super-hero fare the major companies were marketing at the time, and marked the birth of comics as a unique, counterculture art form. In addition, Crumb’s “do-it-yourself” distribution helped open the way for the independent and small press comics that would follow.

Zap is also notable as having the comic numbered at issue #0. Crumb’s original pages for the first issue were stolen before they could be published. By the time he discovered Xerox copies of the work, a new #1 had already been printed, so Crumb released the original story as #0.
