Superman/Fantastic Four

    (DC, 1999)
™ and ©1999 DC Comics and Marvel Characters, Inc.

In this treasury-sized crossover, Marvel Comics’ Galactus sends a message across dimensions, intended to lure DC’s Superman into becoming his new herald. The message, however, is intercepted by Hank Henshaw, the cyborg Superman who alters it for his own ends. As the story evolves, Superman contacts Galactus’ old foe, the Fantastic Four for help, only to be scooped up—along with Mr. Fantastic—to become servants of Galactus. The rest of the Fantastic Four must then race to save them, accompanied by the treacherous Henshaw, who seeks to steal Galactus’ power.

Although it sports a beautiful cover by Alex Ross, the story never truly overcomes the innate challenges in producing an intercompany crossover, and comes off as contrived and convoluted as a result. There are nice touches, however, such as when young Franklin Richards is seen watching the Superman cartoon show, seeing the adventures as fiction in his dimension, but knowing that Superman exists for real in a parallel dimension.
