In 1996, Tapestry (an imprint of Caliber Comics) introduced their new edition of Shades of Gray Comics and Stories. Shades is a quiet and rather wonderful comic from creator Jimmy Gownley. It’s about growing up, about friendship…about all the things that make being a teenager sad, joyous, painful, and beautiful. Equally important is what it’s not about: namely self-indulgent angst, super-heroes in spandex, or clichéd potboilers—all the things that can make comics tedious instead of fun.
