He wore a trench coat and fedora and spoke in cryptic mysteries as he moved, omniscient and distant, through the shadows of this Charlton Comics Group book, narrating odd tales with a twist. It was essentially a comic book adaptation of the Mysterious Traveler radio dramas.

In a typical issue, the traveler watches a man who hears voices struggle with his ability to levitate; a scientist’s attempts to create the ultimate microscope; a truck driver deals with an alien invasion. Then the traveler tells what really happened to that dog sent up into space by the Russians.

The advertisements are a treat. Free body-building courses! Atomic smoke bombs! Shrunken heads! One comics-style ad, presented as a Charlton public service, encouraged children to have a day of fun with their fathers.

The book ran from 1956 to 1959 and returned briefly from DC Comics in 1985.
