Holmes
(O-P-P, 2005)
™ and © Omaha Perez
The introduction to this comic describes its tale as “a vicious skewering of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic literary creations.” Points to the creators: They carry out that mandate in this first issue of the mini-series’ adventure, titled “Haydn’s Head.” (According to the intro, this is the first of multiple mini-series.)
Omaha Perez’ art and writing portray the humorous side of the story well enough, and it’s funny in many parts. However, it’s not riotously funny—and, given the potential of something like this, that’s what I expected. Nonetheless, it is fun to read and the cover is a beaut.
This comic book also contains two smaller stories: “Periphery #2” by Matthew Smith, Brian Horton, and Mark Fearing and “Like a Rolling Stone Age,” also by Fearing. “Periphery” provides the interesting story of a wandering man who finds a sword as he roams the desert. In “Rolling Stone Age,” four cavemen contemplate the evolution of the Stone Age and various other ages; it’s amusing and—given discussions in recent years about the various comics ages—slyly appropriate.
