Evel Knievel
(Marvel, 1974)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.
In the 60s and 70s, Robert Craig “Evel” Kneivel thrilled audiences with outrageous and downright dangerous motorcycle and other stunts. The tricks came to a head in 1974 when Kneivel attempted to jump Snake Canyon in a rocket and failed. He did a couple of more jumps, but after injuring himself again, announced his retirement. Before he did, Marvel Comics and Ideal Toy Company got in on the action and issued an Evel Kneivel doll with a comic book. Everything sold well until Kneivel retired and his superstunt fame and associated merchandise quietly went away.
