Lobo the Duck
(Amalgam, 1997)
™ and ©1997 DC Comics and Marvel Characters, Inc.
The Amalgam experiment in 1996 proved so successful that Marvel and DC undertook another batch of titles in 1997 featuring character conglomerations, but decided to forego any contrivance to account for the presence of these titles, like the four-issue mini-series Marvel Versus DC/DC Versus Marvel, of the previous year.
Perhaps the most unlikely, yet appropriate, mingling of characters was this one which combined the most over-the-top characters of each company: Lobo, the Last Czarnian, a bounty hunter with a bad attitude; and Howard the Duck, a walking, talking, cigar-smoking duck with a…bad attitude. Howard’s bad attitude was usually justified by circumstances and the bizarre people he encountered. His popularity peaked in the 70s under the helm of his creator, Steve Gerber; in the cynical 90s, the audacity and defiance of Lobo made Lobo the big fan favorite. Predictably, it is Lobo’s arrogance that dominates.
