Cavewoman has always had a not-entirely professional quality to it. The weakness in the art becomes apparent whenever the story (a distillation of just about every B-movie cliché imaginable) wanders from what creator Bud Root clearly thinks of as “the good parts” — the barely dressed Meriem and King Kong look-alike Klyde. They’re always lovingly depicted, but less-important cast members tend to look like Mort Drucker caricatures.

Still, the comic book always serves up a generous amount of fun and it’s clear by the way he treats her, in spite of the copious amounts of cheesecake, Root clearly respects his main character. And you have to respect anyone who uses his comic book to help promote (appropriately enough) the U.S. Breast Cancer Research stamp.

Sadly, this special sideways issue (reading like a series of spectacular Sunday comics) is a lousy jumping-on spot for new readers. There’s no handy “Who’s Who” of the large cast, let alone a handy bit of exposition to explain what they’re doing. But there are jungle girls, giant apes, yetis, monster fights, plane crashes, and zombies. Who could ask for anything more?
