Batman: Blackgate

Let’s face it: very few writers can do gritty like Chuck Dixon (The Punisher, Nightwing, Birds of Prey). And very few writers can do Batman like him either. This one-shot from Dixon and artist Joe Staton (All Star Comics, Legion of Super-Heroes) is downright hardboiled; after learning that the inmates of Blackgate Prison are organizing a massive riot and jailbreak, Batman goes inside to put a stop to it. Now, you may be thinking, “So what? At least, it’s not Arkham Asylum with the Joker, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, and all those other nuts!” But as Batman tells Commissioner Gordon early on, “There are more [inmates] and they’re not crippled by dementia.” It looks like a long night for our favorite long-eared hero.
