Superboy (2nd Series)

Series continued in Adventures of Superboy #19

This second Superboy series kicked off in conjunction with 1990’s Superboy television show. Although the TV show was for the most part a weak attempt to give the Man of Steel youthful appeal, the corresponding comic was an unexpected delight. It was set in the same “world” as the show, but it managed to combine humor and action in just the right proportion.

One of the masterstrokes of both series was the creation of Nicknack, the Master of Toys. Nicknack was played on television by comedian Gilbert Gottfried, whose routine consisted almost solely of a hyperactive whining. The fictional world played this to the hilt, with characters constantly torturing Nicknack by saying how much he looked like “that comedian.”

For its last few issues, this series was known as “The Adventures of Superboy.”
