A Piece of Steak

In the modern Sweet Science argot, Tom King would be derisively called a palooka or a tomato can. As he walked into the ring, more often than not someone would loudly comment, “He’s nothin’ but a bum!” and not a single eyebrow would be raised. Tom realizes the easy wins early in his career were against older, slower men like himself. Broken men without vitality and hope that had been mercilessly beaten out of them years before by quick money, fast living and the iron law of the ring. Anyone who has watched a prizefight has seen ‘Tom King’ in the flesh—the broken down fighter matched against the rising star. Spectators think not of a fighter’s motivations but only of the entertainment. This one-shot brilliantly captures the poetic brutality of the Ring and reminds one of the true cost of a Piece of Steak.
