UltraForce/Avengers Prelude
(Malibu, 1995)
™ and © Malibu Comics Entertainment, Inc. and respective creators
This “prelude” issue (it’s actually UltraForce #11) is the lead-in to 1995’s long awaited UltraForce/Avengers team-up, in which Loki, Thor’s evil half-brother, messes up the history of several dozen alternate earths while playing with the Infinity Gems (from the numerous Marvel limited series that started with the Infinity Gauntlet). Here, the Avengers’ Black Knight and Sersi of the Eternals tumble to the fact that Loki is up to mischief on a universal scale and, working with members of UltraForce, including Prime and Hardcase, set out to stop him. Easily one of the most convoluted inter-company crossovers, this Malibu/Marvel prelude does have some redeeming features, including a great cover by Avengers artist George Perez. The story also shines something of a narrative spotlight on the Black Knight, one of Marvel’s more interesting, if underused characters. The fact that he stands out among an absolute cavalcade of Marvel and Malibu characters is a testament to the writing powers of Terry Kavanagh (X-Man, Before the Fantastic Four: The Storms).
