Through a cleverly staged deception, a soldier manages to get on the last flight from Venus after fighting in a disastrous war. But when he returns home, he finds a war of a different kind. In the year 2015, New York has become the capital of the five United States and has over thirty million inhabitants in its overcrowded streets. Those without money kill and steal in order to survive; those with money buy guns in order to relieve their aggression by randomly shooting people on the street.

The soldier is due $250,000 for his mercenary duties to his country, but after Uncle Sam takes his cut of expenses, the soldier is left with only $16—$7.50 of which goes towards buying shoes to replace the boots he has to turn in. Left with only a few dollars and a bullet-proof vest to his name, the soldier doesn’t have much hope. But if he survived Venus, maybe he can survive New York…
