The second novel in Koji Suzuki’s “Ring” trilogy is Spiral. If you’ve been following the manga, prepare to be confused (again). The novel was adapted into a Japanese TV show, a Japanese feature film, an American feature film, etc. The second manga (Ring 2) adapted the sequel to the movie and was not a direct sequel to the first manga. This, the third manga, adapts the second novel. The first novel has serious differences from its film adaptation, particularly the protagonists. Those differences are reflected here.

Additionally, this storyline takes the curse of The Ring out of the purely supernatural and introduces pseudo-science. (Prepare to learn the term “the ring virus.”) Some people, particularly those only familiar with the films, will hate that.

Well-rounded Ringophiles will be right at home, of course. Comics fans may also be willing to cast their nets a little wider. People who can accept both Adam West’s and Frank Miller’s visions of Batman as part of the same mythos should have no problem seeing the Japanese, American, film, novel, and manga renditions as pieces of a greater modern mythology.
