This massive – each issue covers over 100 pages of material – monthly anthology helped to bring manga closer to the U.S. mainstream. The magazine collected some of Japan’s most acclaimed cutting-edge serials including Yu Watase’s Fushigi Yugi, Masakazu Katsura’s Video Girl Ai, and Chiho Saito’s Revolutionary Girl Utena, all of which became successful animated series. The reprinted tales were published as they were in Japan, in brief yet usually emotionally powerful installments. Animerica Extra is essentially a spin-off of Animerica, a publication devoted to covering Japanese comics and animation.
