Combining elements of super-hero, supernatural, sci-fi, and manga-style comics, this black-and-white limited series establishes a superteam of previous Night Wynd Enterprises creations—Kohl Drake, Maire Siddons, Mark Quay, and Kamakazi—to fight “something evil abroad in the land.” A fairly noble mission, to be sure. Although the editorial text assures readers that they can “jump on to our story with no lengthy explanations,” little effort is made to actually introduce the characters to the audience. While a first-issue back-story can be cumbersome and awkward, a complete lack of explanation starts things off on uncertain footing and makes luring readers a difficult task. Dragonfire’s action sequences are compelling enough, but those who enjoy the characterization that is a staple of most superteam comics may find this series a bit empty.
