Millennium Edition: Whiz Comics

™ and © 2000 DC Comics

To celebrate the end of one millennium and the beginning of another, DC Comics published a series of Millennium Editions that reprinted significant books from the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages of Comics. Among the earliest heroes to follow in Superman’s mighty footsteps, Captain Marvel burst onto the scene in 1940 in Fawcett’s Whiz Comics #2, which was actually the title’s first published issue, and remained the lead feature until DC’s lawyers shut down the Marvel Family in 1953. Whiz Comics #2 also introduced such Fawcett Comics second-string stalwarts as Spy Smasher (called Crime Smasher after World War II), Ibis the Invincible, and the Golden Arrow, all of whom teamed up with leading man Captain Marvel from time to time throughout the title’s run.
