Anyone familiar with the work of Garth Ennis knows he has a special appreciation for war heroes, from minor characters in his Preacher series to his work on such characters as Nick Fury. 303 takes its name from an inanimate “hero”—a gun that has figured prominently in some of the world’s greatest battles—and the lives it touches. The .303 caliber Lee Enfield bolt–action rifle has a lot of history to it, and Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows team up to tell a tale of it and the silent, stone–faced Russian soldier who wields it.

The story is also one of heroism, villainy, and not just war, but the consequences of it, on individuals both larger–than–life and powerless. Grim, and Ennis’s own words, strange.
