Smokey Bear

Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear campaign is the longest running public service campaign in US History. Years after Smokey (no “the”) Bear began warning Americans of the dangers of forest fires, he was the star of his own Gold Key comic book. From his cabin in the forest, Smokey dutifully answers fire distress calls from his talking animal friends. He is also involved in a myriad of other slapstick adventures with colorful forest denizens, including Gabby the mountain lion and Benny the bunny. Regardless of his side adventures, Smokey’s general message remains the same: “Only you can prevent forest fires.”

Fun Fact: The cartoon Smokey Bear is based upon an actual baby black bear that was found alone, charred, and scared after a devastating wildfire burned through New Mexico.
