The movie serial King of the Rocket Men was seemingly the inspiration for Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer, and as that was being given the full Hollywood treatment Christopher Moeller adapted the 1941 serial. He’s either been very adept at disguising the cliffhanger clichés of the original, or it was a superior effort to begin with, romping along and encompassing action, suspense, red herrings, and a fine selection of serial nasties. The Rocketman of the title is security officer Jeff King, who wears a flying suit developed in secret by one member of a group of scientists he’s investigating. Another of them is the mysterious Vulcan, supplying information to the Nazis. Moeller’s shades-of-brown painted art, intended to evoke the period, occasionally turns to mud, but it’s largely effective. Tune in, turn off, and enjoy. ~WJ
