Pecos Bill
(Top Sellers, 1971-1973)
™ and © Top Sellers Ltd.
Like Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill was a mythical figure of early American lore. He was the definitive cowboy who personified the virtues of the Old West, and as with most myths, his exploits and friends were decidedly exaggerated. The title character in this comic, while capable of incredible achievements differs significantly from the Pecos Bill legend. (For instance, it includes a character named Davy Crockett is a kind of sidekick/comedy relief in the vein of Gabby Hayes, although Davy Crockett was a real person who died at the Alamo.)
This title, produced in England and printed in Italy, has full color front and back painted covers, but the interior artwork is stiff and flat and lacking any detail in the background. The stories are possibly more improbable than the myths, owing to an element of fantasy. In one story, Pecos Bill fights an Egyptian pharaoh and his slaves whose civilization has endured in a hidden cave since the continent of America and Africa were one landmass.
