Camp Comics

    (Dell, 1942)
™ and © Dell Publishing Co.

When World War II broke out, Dell—noted for its comics dedicated for young readers—tried out a title to be distributed to the Armed Forces. The stories were clearly aimed at adult males and carried advertising (something else Dell comics of the day did not have) for cigarettes and shaving gear.

The anthology series featured straight adventure strips and slapstick comedy, one of the latter features being “Seaman Sy Wheeler” written and drawn by Walt Kelly. The war lasted longer than Camp Comics did.
