JLA: The Island of Dr. Moreau

    (DC, 2002)
™ and ©2002 DC Comics

In Elseworlds stories, familiar characters are placed in unfamiliar settings and/or situations. But in this case, the bestial versions of DC’s most popular characters, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman and others, are barely recognizable as the heroes we know. Combining the classic tale from H.G. Wells with the legends of Jack the Ripper, Roy Thomas presents a story of genetic engineering, murder, and madness. By gifting his scientifically-enhanced menagerie with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal “men”, the brilliant but misguided Moreau attempts to create a group of super-powered heroes. But on their first foray under public scrutiny, his Justifiers of Law to the Anointed discover that their savage, bestial natures are not easily overcome. It is a lesson that they, and the world, will never forget.
