Writer Ken Jones, known for his contributions to The Comics Journal, Amazing Heroes, and Comics Interview, described this comic as “…not…a new talent showcase or an anthology book but…the cutting edge for the comics of tomorrow.” Unfortunately, the ’cutting edge‘ only lasted one issue.
In the lead story, small-town publisher Walter Shuster (alluded to as the uncle of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster) is brutally murdered, and his restless soul becomes trapped within the confines of his own printing press. Of course, one might argue that Shuster’s fate was his just reward, for being the editor too shortsighted to publish the Man of Steel‘s newspaper strips! After over 50 years of imprisonment, Walter’s spirit finally realizes his true purpose and abilities. As The Conscious, it is Walter’s charge to judge and punish the City’s evildoers, in much the same way as DC‘s more religiously-themed Spectre.
