Leopold Nordstrom was a student of the occult who managed to cross over into another dimension. There he fell in love with the queen of a race of feline beings. This union resulted in a daughter, Cathy Nordstrom. Eventually, turmoil in the other dimension forced Leopold to flee with Cathy, with the dimensional gateway closing after him. In the years since, he has sought a way to return, while Cathy grew into a beautiful young woman.

On her eighteenth birthday, Cathy went sailing with her boyfriend, and they chanced across a magical island which had appeared following a recent earthquake. They decided to explore the island and encountered its inhabitants, a cursed gang of pirates who slew the couple. It was then that Cathy discovered firsthand that the legends of cats (and cat-people) having nine lives were true. She came back from the dead as the Leather Cat, a sexy adventuress determined to stop the brigands and other evildoers.
