Halo Jones is one of the teeming millions who inhabit the HoopPlex in the 50th century. This is a sprawling series of interconnected tunnels and arenas, looking like nothing so much as a subway station without the trains.

Crammed in with millions of others, life has become unbearable. Rioting is so common that predictions of it are broadcast along with the weather report. Almost nothing nice ever happens without fighting mucking it up, and the act of going shopping is an exercise in cunning and survival instincts.

But whether she knows it or not, eighteen-year-old Halo is a survivor. And if she’s very, very lucky, she may find a way to escape her hellish, futuristic, homeworld.
