Harry the Cop
(Slave Labor, 1992)
™ and ©1992 Brian McDonald and Wayne Cash
A policeman should suggest safety, security, even comfort. Millions of Americans, however, fear police as much as they do criminals.
This one-shot takes a very serious look at what it’s like to be black (or Hispanic, gay, Jewish, Asian, etc.), in a world where the majority of the so-called peacekeepers are white. It’s a situation that many can imagine: some guy thinks you’re a bad person, just because of your race, religion, maybe even your clothes. It happens. Now imagine that same guy in a position of authority, armed with a gun, and backed by hundreds of coworkers. This guy can do anything he wants, and all the other cops are going to back him up. After all, he’s one of the good guys. Getting scared yet?
Written only a few months before the taped beating of Rodney King, this short, simple tale is both prophetic and disturbing in its realism.
