Not Brand Echh

Not Brand Echh was part of Marvel’s expansion in 1967, a boom time for the comic book industry. Feeling confident in itself, Marvel decided the time was right to have some fun.

The title was a takeoff on the old advertising icon of inferior “Brand X” products. Not Brand Echh promised to bring readers the finest in humor and entertainment, done up in the madcap Marvel style. Nothing was sacred here: Marvel heroes and villains were routinely lampooned, along with Pogo, Peanuts, and of course, the “Brand Echh” competition at DC.

Although it would be canceled little over a year later in the comic book bust of 1968, Not Brand Echh left at least one enduring legacy: the stove pot-wearing super-hero Forbush Man. This incredibly incompetent super-hero became a fixture on letters columns and in Marvel bullpen gags for many years to come.
