Dictators of the Twentieth Century: Saddam
(Antarctic, 2004)
™ and © Antarctic Press
In this installment of AP’s Dictators of the Twentieth Century series, we are given a look at the life of Saddam Hussein. But to understand how such a power–mad person could come into power during the late 1970s, writer Ted S. Nomiura takes a leisurely pace and puts the entire middle east conflict into context with detailed descriptions from history. You cannot understand a person unless you know what kind of a world he grew up in and how it got that way. Nomiura takes the time to educate the reader and bring us up to date with more than just flashy pictures of planes bombing buildings. The result is a thoughtful documentary which can be long at times, but well worth the read.
