The Legend of the Shield

The original Shield was a patriotic super-hero who had great strength and a suit of star-spangled armor that rendered him practically invulnerable. He fought for his country until the sixties, when he abruptly disappeared. The Shield was later found operating in Viet Nam, but his suit was recovered and the whole affair was hushed up. Many years later, military scientists had been unable to duplicate the incredible Mannexalar alloy which gave the suit its strength. They had, however, found the right man to wear it. The new Shield was to be Joseph Higgins, son of Brigadier General Marion Higgins. The elder Higgins had relentlessly driven his son to become the best, and when he joined the army, Joseph rose to second lieutenant. General Higgins wanted his boy to become the new Shield, however, so he busted him down to sergeant to fit the role.

This title kicked off DC’s Impact Comics line, a nineties revival of the old Archie super-heroes of the sixties.
