Tangent Comics/Sea Devils

™ and ©1997 DC Comics

In the late 1990s, DC Comics took several of their characters and titles and created totally new stories based only on the names. The new concepts were marketed as Tangent Comics.

The original Sea Devils were a group of scuba-diving adventurers who often found themselves fighting alongside many of DC’s super-heroes. The new Tangent versions are a little more…well, exotic.

For years, humans have dumped their toxic waste into the oceans, even testing nuclear weapons beneath the seas without care for the consequences. After decades, the contaminants mutated many of the creatures native to the ocean depths. At first barely more than monsters, the creatures eventually evolved into intelligent, societal beings. The various tribes of the Sea Devil populace still possess the properties of the creatures they evolved from, as aggressive sharks living alongside more gentle-mannered fish-men. Unfortunately, the land-dwellers are frightened of their new neighbors, and their prejudice barely allows them to acknowledge the Sea Devils’ intelligence.
