Graphic Nonfiction: Spartacus

    (Rosen, 2005)
™ and © Rosen

Part comic book, part textbook, this “graphic nonfiction” classroom aid details the gladiator rebellion of 73–71 B.C. against the ruling Romans, led by Spartacus, himself a former soldier in the Roman army. Although Spartacus’ ragtag army was eventually defeated, their revolt against their tyrannical leaders indirectly led to the downfall of the Roman Republic, which, ironically, led to the rise of the Roman Empire.

This book also includes historical information on the gladiators and the Games, Roman culture, notable politicians and soldiers, and a brief account of the socio-political state of the world at the time. Although it is intended for elementary school students, more mature readers are likely to learn something new, too.
