The Human Torch (1st Series)
(Marvel, 1940-1954)
™ and ©1948 Cornell Publishing Corp.
Professor Horton thought he had built the perfect android. Unfortunately, his creation burst into flame when exposed to air. The android soon learned to control his power and took flight as the Human Torch in Marvel Comics #1 (1939). He costarred with Timely’s other major super-hero, the Sub-Mariner, in the pages of Marvel Mystery Comics and soon earned his own book, taking over Red Raven Comics, renamed The Human Torch with issue #2 in 1940. He also picked up a teen companion, Toro, and together they fought crime, Nazis, and Communist spies for nearly 15 years.
The Human Torch was created by Carl Burgos, who drew many of his adventures during the Golden Age. In 1961, Marvel borrowed the concept of a flaming super-hero for Johnny Storm, the teenaged member of the Fantastic Four. The Golden Age Torch made a few appearances in the modern age, notably in Marvels in 1995.
