In the mid-1500s the powerful Spanish empire was an impressive force in the new lands of the Americas. However as the hapless passengers of the ship, “Espíritu Santo” discovered, an empire is of little help against the whims of nature. Shipwrecked off the coast of the Texas shoreline by gale winds, the survivors came to envy the drowned before their ordeal ended. A lack of provisions and the oppressive desert environment was challenging enough but the presence of hostile natives made the ordeal all the more formidable. Decades later, the now addled Friar Marcos recalls the time of tribulation that he, and one other Spaniard, managed to survive.

This title is an unusual mixture or history and horror; something like a cross between Classics Illustrated and The Vault of Horror. It relates gruesome historical events introduced by a macabre host who appears to be a living corpse.
