Devil May Cry

For those less than familiar with the Devil May Cry universe, here are the basics:

Two thousand years ago, the legendary dark knight Sparda defeated Mundus, ridding the world of the demon’s reign of terror. Unfortunately, this was merely a temporary setback for the ruler of the underworld, since a band of his followers proceeded to resurrect him. Now, Sparda’s son, Dante, is Earth’s only hope against the impending threat. Prior to facing Mundus, however, Dante must battle hordes of giant bug creatures, evil puppets, and other enemies.

Unlike the recently released Maximo comic book, which was a sequel to its PlayStation2 progenitor, Devil May Cry is essentially an abridged adaptation of its PS2 counterpart. In fact, and this calls for a Spoiler Warning, the cliffhanger ending of this first issue is an attack by the boss who appears at the end of Mission Three of the game.

The appeal of Capcom’s Devil May Cry videogame lies not in the storyline, but in its dark and dashing, weapons-laden lead character, who vanquishes horde after horde of demons with unprecedented style and coolness. Dante’s slick movements aren’t translated very well here, but the painted art does a respectable job of capturing the dark atmosphere and overall look of the game.

Bottom line is this: Playing the game is much more fun than reading the comic book.
