Latigo was a daily newspaper cartoon strip created by Stan Lynde. It began publication in 1979, a time when Western strips were virtually unheard of, more so one like Latigo which had its stories unfold over the course of several months. Nevertheless, the combination of an engaging lead character and Lynde’s clean artwork added up to a winning combination.

“Latigo” was the nom de guerre of Cole Cantrell, formerly a Union Soldier during the American Civil War. Returning home after that conflict, he discovered his parent’s home in flames. Cole’s father, Irishman “Badger” Cantrell and Cole’s mother, Crow Indian White Elk, had come into conflict with the Python Corporation. Python’s head sought to build a railway line through their land, and when the couple refused to sell, he sent gunmen to kill them. Latigo brought the killers to justice, but the Python Corporation would become a longtime enemy for him.
