Manga and anime favorite Lum returned in 1994 for more madcap hilarity in this American series. Lum is an alien princess with magical and flying powers, who became the wife of Ataru Moroboshi after he defeated her in a contest. Although Lum is sweet (if somewhat mischievous), Ataru is a woman-chasing lout whose lechery inevitably lands him in trouble. In the first issue alone, he inadvertently summoned a devil by chasing along a crooked jogging path after a squad of nubile women joggers. The path formed a sign invoking the devil, and after jogging it thirteen times, his soul was forfeit. Only Lum’s intervention saved him from disaster.

The always-funny Rumiko Takahashi is at her comic best here, with a lighthearted, slapstick style that works well across all languages.
