Peacemaker (Mini-Series)
(DC, 1988)
™ and ©1988 DC Comics, Inc.
Christopher Smith was born Christopher Schmidt, son of Nazi war criminal Wolfgang Schmidt. Chris’ father had been the enthusiastic commandant of the Schlasa concentration camp. Although Wolfgang Schmidt escaped prosecution at the end of the war, his crimes were eventually revealed. In desperation, and in the presence of young Christopher, Wolfgang Schmidt took his own life.
Christopher grew up as a troubled child, intelligent, but possessed by an inner rage. When grown, he enlisted in the military and fought in the Viet Nam war. In the midst of the tour, Christopher seemed to crack and opened fire on a village of unarmed Vietnamese civilians. He was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes, but was recruited later as part of a “Peacemaker” program to fight terrorists. Obsessed with his new mission, he sees it as a way of atoning for his, and his father’s crimes. But all the same, he’s giving a new meaning to the term, “loose cannon.”
