Red Sonja: A Death in Scarlet

    (Cross Plains, 1999)
™ and ©1999 The Red Sonja Corporation

Although this series isn’t part of the Marvel canon of the Conan saga, it is certainly a close relative. Long-time Conan writer Roy Thomas (All-Star Squadron), who first expanded the Sonja character from her humble beginnings as a bit player in a Howard pulp story, is on hand here again to tell of Sonja’s origins. In this series, we learn how a young Hyrkanian lass came to be orphaned, how she learned the way of the sword, and how she avenged her family’s death (and still found time to pick up that snazzy, if impractical, chain-mail bikini). Artist Steve Lightle (Classic X-Men) brings a new look to this fan favorite, a look quite different—but no less beautiful—than the classic Sonja, as defined by artists Barry Windsor-Smith and Frank Thorne. Conan completists and all lovers of that she-devil with a sword won’t want to miss this one.
