A group of disparate teen “types” discover a terrible secret about their parents that will change their lives forever. No, it’s not Out There; it’s Runaways, Marvel’s latest and least “manga” title.

For the few remaining Marvel Zombies in existence, it wittily acknowledges the fact that the story takes place in the Marvel universe, then speedily moves on to establishing the teens, who for once don’t carry the stench of Hollywood focus groups on them. Writing about young people can go bad fast, but none of their voices here seem forced, fake, or phony, and there’s an emotional immediacy to their interactions that never screams soap opera, let alone super-team.

The art is not manga-inspired; stylish and original, it’s different from anything else Marvel’s publishing these days. But, as with manga, readers aren’t given much meat in the first installment. What there is, is certainly choice, and, when you’re not sure what the next issue will be like, you know you’re onto something good.
