Exotic Romances
(Comic Magazines, 1955-1956)
™ and ©1955 Comic Magazines
Formerly running as True War Romances, this series became Exotic Romances with issue #22 in 1955. Full of short vignettes that always lead to happiness and matrimony for its “good girl” protagonists, Exotic Romances is typical of the “Horatio Alger romance” comics aimed at 1950s teenage girls. Sometimes the girls in the stories go through heartbreak in the midst of their tales as they realize they’re engaged to cads (“I’ll never forget the horror and the humiliation I felt when I went to the Paris Club to surprise him!”). Still, there’s no need for fear, as the simple buy sweet heroines always find equally simple but sweet boys to wipe away their tears and get happily hitched by the end of the eight page (“Suddenly I saw Chet not as a boy who needed my help, but as a man…a man I needed and loved!”)
Despite its title, the stories’ settings were, generally, as domestic as the characters.
