The Symbiotes
(Drive, 2004-2005)
™ and © Drive
Regardless of the story, this series would get high marks based on its production. There have been relatively few full-CGI efforts in comics, so it’s safe to say that this may be the most dynamic of its kind. But this visually stunning work is as much due to Lippert’s visual creativity as it is to the execution. Alien creatures and landscapes never looked so vivid.
It’s also stunning in no small part because Vaughn’s story is a straight-out, planet-jumping science-fiction adventure, a semi-rarity in comics nowadays. Vaughn’s universe is one dominated by the fascist, xenophobic, and ever-expanding Human Empire, and the political overtones alone should be enough to please fans who enjoyed similar explorations in Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers or Frank Herbert’s Dune.
