Swamp Thing (4th Series)

What’s going on here? That question, above any others, should be answered in the first issue of a new series, especially a relaunch of a famous DC character that has already had several series. Andy Diggle does a fine job recapping Swamp Thing’s origin and the subsequent Alan Moore retconning, but little to no effort is made to explain recent events in the history of Alec Holland. Readers who haven’t kept up since the Moore days are going to be left confused at the presence of Swamp Thing’s daughter, Tefé Holland. Where did she come from?

Still, the first issue is worth buying based on the art alone. Enrique Breccia immediately recalls John Buscema and Milton Caniff and would be right at home in one of those sprawling Sunday adventure comic strips of yesteryear. He’s a good fit for Swamp Thing. The colors are flat, but excessive coloring would ruin the total package, so Martin Breccia has the right idea.

Why is Swamp Thing a Vertigo title? Other than a few profanities, this title could fit in the mainstream DC universe, which is where Swamp Thing belongs. A comic book about a swamp creature does not need to be for mature readers.

If a little more effort is taken to explain just what is going on in Swamp Thing’s world, to give the current events more context, then this title could succeed.
