The Fighting Man
(Ajax, 1952-1953)
™ and ©1952 Excellent Publications, Inc.
The Fighting Man was one of the anonymous recruits into the swelling ranks of war comics during the early 1950s, when interest in the genre presumably peaked because of America’s involvement in the Korean conflict. An undercurrent of simpleminded anticommunist propaganda, undistinguished artwork, and uninspired rehashes of the same tired war comic clichés which pervade the pages of Fighting Man.
Lacking the innocence of the first generation of war comics and the insight of later contributions to the genre, titles like Fighting Man nevertheless constituted an important component of the comic book market during the late 1940s and early 1950s, when super-heroes had gone into hibernation.
