Yawn
(Parody, 1992)
™ and ©1992 Don Chin and Bill Maus
One of the earliest parodies of the Image line, Yawn takes broad shots at Image’s marquee super-hero Spawn, as well as throwing in barbs aimed at virtually every other of the first-run Image heroes. The title character, Yawn, is a former couch potato who got hit by a lightning bolt that struck the antenna of his new TV. Since then, he lives an overly costumed unlife cursed by perpetual sleepiness, which prevents him from ever enjoying a TV show or movie.
Artist Bill Maus scores when he mocks the overwrought, splash-page-heavy style of early Spawn issues, as well as some of the more questionable costuming decisions. (Why does Spawn wear all that heavy link chain anyway?)
