Café Occult

Hit by a truck, high school student Su Rin suddenly discovers herself in an afterlife that operates remarkably like this one, finding shelter in a coffee shop called Café Occult. A protector of sorts is Young, who uses his cross–shaped gun and its special bullets to protect her from the mysterious big boss of a soul–slavery ring.

At the very least, the first volume of a series should establish its characters and situations, but both remain vague here, with readers never told how this spiritual plane operates or why the bad guys want Su Rin’s soul so badly. And maybe it’s just the shock, but it seems odd she doesn’t once think about anyone from her old life or even seem all that put out that she’s dead. It’s well–trod material told in a pedestrian manner and, for a manwha, certainly has very Japanese–looking art and the interesting innovation of dueling sound effects. The original Korean ones constantly compete with the new English ones.
