Onion Jack dreamed of becoming a chef. Unfortunately for his pursuit of a normal life, Jack was found by his adoptive parents in a crashed rocket, bitten by a glowing spider, given a magic ring, struck by lightening, had a vat of chemicals spill on him, was exposed to cosmic rays and experienced a few other not–so–subtle super–hero origins. It seems that fate had something other than a culinary destiny in store for him. The minimalist art of Joel Priddy is no detriment to this humorous super–hero satire that teaches why you really should follow your dreams.

Other offerings in this Free Comic Book Day promotional issue from AdHouse Books are less satisfying. “The Journals of St. Xixis” is a bit uninspiring, and “Found and Lost,” the adventure of Apple Dumpling and his sidekick Sensational Strudel, is a less inspired satire of super–hero conventions.
