Chamber of Darkness

Inspired by the success of the Joe Orlando-edited “mystery” titles at DC in the early 1970s, Marvel launched its own horror/suspense books like Chamber of Darkness, Tower of Shadows, and others. Many of the chilling tales followed the classic horror comic formulas laid down by EC in Tales From the Crypt (sanitized for the Comics Code, of course), and were illustrated with gusto by some of Marvel’s top talents of the time, including John Severin, Gil Kane, John Buscema, and Bernie Wrightson. The Marvel books also mined a richer source for story inspiration, adapting tales from the fantasy and horror pulps of the 1930s such as Weird Tales.
