Weird Space
(Avalon, 2000)

Let us recall the state of affairs in the aftermath of World War II. America is the superpower, the Soviet Union has erected an Iron Curtain across Eastern Europe, the danger of the bomb hangs over the world and communism has supplanted fascism as the new evil. Interestingly enough, the Soviet Union was thought of as a backward nation until one incident changed that perception overnight—Sputnik. The little satellite forever changed politics, academia, pop culture and literature. This title recalls those post-war years with excitement. It’s a Saturday afternoon B-movie double feature at the matinee. Although the science fiction is skewed towards science speculation, it’s fun and entertaining reading. Part of the fun is the subtle Cold War allegory of democracy versus communism interwoven throughout the stories.
