Fallen Angel

Maybe it’s just me but Fallen Angel has “pilot for the WB” written all over it. At least I hope so, as she’s no super-hero and with no apparent supernatural elements (yet) there isn’t much here to appeal to the Vertigo crowd.

So what Peter David has here is a crime fighter with a distinctive style of dress, an unlikely street name, and who doesn’t worry that much about money — which to me makes her a TV private eye. Like a lot of them, “Lee” (huh) operates out of a seedy bar full of colorful locals, set in a distinctive locale where she has a playful love/hate relationship with an authority figure.

Of course with Fallen Angel being female, David’s come up with a neat little twist on the genre I just didn’t see coming. Which is helpful since the predictable plot has also been a staple of dozens of TV shows. Still, the job of a first issue is to successfully introduce the concepts and characters and make the reader want to see #2 — and David’s done that and then some.
